On Monday evening, US Congressman Ilhan Omar attacked the arms deal that her country recently concluded with Israel, warning of its repercussions, and considered that it would be a green light for escalation by Israel.
“The United States must not stand idly by while it commits crimes against humanity with our support,” the Somali Muslim representative said, in a statement posted on Twitter following media reports that President Joe Biden’s administration approved a $ 735 million arms deal with Israel.
Omar stressed that it would be appalling for the Biden administration to proceed with a precision-guided arms deal worth 735 million for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu without any restrictions, in the wake of the escalation of violence and attacks on civilians. And she warned that this deal would be considered a green light for continued escalation, and would undermine any attempts to broker a ceasefire.
She added, “The violence in Israel and the Gaza Strip is getting out of control, and the extreme right-wing Israeli leader, Netanyahu, is responsible for less than 1,505 victims in Gaza, including 200 deaths, 59 of whom are children.”
And it continued in its statement that Netanyahu completely destroyed residential buildings and targeted journalists and civilians in direct violation of international law, and he is doing so and is receiving direct funding and military assistance from the United States.
Arms deal
On Monday, the Washington Post revealed that the Biden administration informed Congress on May 5 that it agreed to sell Israel precision-guided missiles, also known as Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM), at a value of $ 735 million.
According to the sources, Congress will discuss this deal, and that a number of members of Congress from the Democratic wing are upset with it, and they requested additional information about it.
The newspaper pointed out that a member of Congress said that approving this sale without pressure on the Israeli government to cease fire, will lead to the continuation of the massacres against the Palestinians.
Since May 10, the Israeli army has continued its raids on separate areas of the Gaza Strip, targeting public facilities, civilian homes and government institutions.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, the number of victims of the aggression rose to 212 within a week, including 61 children and 36 women, in addition to 1,400 injuries of varying severity.
