An official with a scientific advisory committee set up by the Indian government said in statements to Reuters that the committee had informed the authorities of the discovery of slight mutations in some samples of the Corona virus that “could avoid the immune response” and require further study.
The consultants added that they are working to identify these mutations, and there is currently no reason to believe that they are spreading or pose a great risk. Scientists are studying the reason behind the current rise in the number of infections in India and whether it was caused by a mutated strain called (B.1.617) (B.1.617) that was detected for the first time in the country.
The World Health Organization did not declare the Indian strain “of concern” as it did about other mutated strains that were first detected in Britain, Brazil and South Africa.
On April 27, however, the organization said that tracking the genome sequence of the B1.617 strain indicated a higher growth rate than other strains in India.
The panel of advisors has discovered more mutations of the Coronavirus and thinks it will need to be closely tracked.
“We see mutations in some samples that can evade immune responses,” said Shahid Jamil, head of the commission and a prominent Indian virologist. He did not mention whether these mutations occurred in the Indian ancestry or another.
He added, “Unless you cultivate these viruses and test them in the laboratory, you cannot be certain. At this stage, there is no reason to believe that they are spreading or that they could be dangerous, but we have specifically mentioned them so that we can put them in mind.”
India recorded for the first time more than 400,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday. The spread of infection led to the collapse of the health system in areas including the capital, New Delhi, with a lack of medical oxygen and hospital beds, according to Reuters. Advertising

Biontech laboratories are “confident” of the effectiveness of their vaccine against the Indian mutant for Corona
Last Wednesday, the director of the Biontech laboratory, Ugur Shaheen, said that he was “confident” of the effectiveness of the vaccine, which his company developed in cooperation with the American Pfizer Group, against the Indian mutated version of the Corona virus.
He said in an Internet press conference that although “tests” are still ongoing, “the Indian mutant has mutations that we have studied in the past and our vaccine is effective against them, which makes us confident” of that.
Shaheen added that the vaccination against Covid-19 will form “a fortress that will hold, I am sure of that.”
He explained that the company Biontech has already tested its vaccine on more than 30 mutants, and each time it got “an adequate immune response.”
