Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that there are new factors preparing for the eruption of an intifada in the Palestinian territories, warning that the situation is on the verge of collapse.
In an article in the Israeli newspaper, “Maariv”, Olmert warned that continuing to target the Palestinians and harm them deliberately and exaggeratedly leaves them no choice but the intifada, as he put it.
Olmert pointed out that the recent events in Jerusalem are an indication that the situation is on the verge of collapse, and may evolve at any moment.
Last week, the Bab al-Amud Square in historic Jerusalem witnessed celebrations following the removal of iron barriers that had been set up by the Israeli occupation forces since the beginning of the month of Ramadan.
And the Palestinian youths considered the removal of the checkpoints – which were set up to prevent them from reaching the square – a victory for the blist they carried out for days, which resulted in dozens of injuries and arrests during a collision with the occupation forces.
The Gaza Strip has also recently witnessed an escalation of security, as several shells were launched from the Strip towards the city of Sderot, some of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome system.
And at dawn on Monday, the Israeli army announced the complete closure of the Gaza Sea to fishermen until further notice, after an earlier reduction of the fishing distance from 15 nautical miles to 9 miles only.
