Today, Saturday, the Ethiopian Cabinet approved the designation of the “Tigray People’s Liberation Front” and “Aung Cheni” group as terrorist organizations.
A statement issued by the Council said that the two organizations “played a role in organizing, financing, training and providing support for the attacks on civilians during the past three years, and that these attacks have become an existential threat to the state.” Read also Ethiopia .. The statement indicated that as a result of the attacks carried out by these two organizations, “many people lost their lives, destroyed their property and were displaced from their homes, as well as undermining confidence in the government and among the people.”
The Council clarified that the decision will become applicable to institutions and individuals who cooperate or have links or are related to the ideas and actions of classified terrorist organizations and others, who have participated in similar activities.
The federal government launched a security campaign against “Ong Chen”, an opposition group that split from the Oromo Liberation Front, in November last year, killing a number of its fighters, but it was unable to eliminate the group.
The government also engaged in military confrontations with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front in the same month, which ended with the federal government’s control of the city of Mikeli, the capital of the Tigray region, and the withdrawal of the Front’s fighters, with reports of human rights violations in the region since then.
An unspecified number of Eritrean forces participated in the military operations in the region. On April 17, Asmara announced its agreement to start its withdrawal.
For about 15 years, the “Popular Front for the Liberation of the Tigrayan People” was the spearhead of the armed struggle against the Marxist military regime that was overthrown in 1991, and it controlled the political and security apparatus of Ethiopia for nearly 30 years.
