The Iraqi Interior Minister Othman Al-Ghanimi ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the escape of 21 detainees from Al-Hilal prison in Al-Muthanna Governorate (south of the country), including those convicted of terrorism and drug trafficking.
For its part, local media, citing a security source, revealed the method of escaping from prison.
A statement by the Security Media Cell stated that the Minister of Interior sent the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Police Affairs, Lieutenant General Imad Muhammad Mahmoud, to Al-Muthanna Governorate to find out the details and circumstances of the escape.
And he added that the security services arrested 9 of the 21 who escaped from Al-Hilal prison at dawn today, Sunday.
The statement indicated that the security and intelligence services in the ministry have been carrying out search, investigation and intelligence tracking procedures to arrest the remaining fugitives from the first hours of the operation.
The governor of Al-Muthanna directed to detain all the officers in the Anti-Narcotics Directorate after the prisoner escape incident to investigate them and to determine if there was a failure to perform the duty or a suspicion of collusion on the part of those in charge of the prison.
On the way to escape from the prison, local media quoted an Iraqi security source as saying that one of the prisoners requested food from the prison guard and then cooperated with other detainees to attack the guard and escape, pointing out that the guard was subjected to separate injuries.
A video clip appeared to show the moment the arrested prisoners escaped, in the early hours of the dawn. Advertising
Incidents of inmates escaping from Iraqi prisons have been repeated for years, amid accusations of collusion by the guards.
The escapes come despite the fact that prisons – especially those that house ISIS operatives and assassination networks – are subject to strict security measures.
