Deaths due to targeting two oil wells in Kirkuk Governorate, Iraq

The Iraqi Oil Ministry said that a number of Iraqi security personnel were killed today, Wednesday, as a result of an attack, which it described as a terrorist, on two oil wells in the Bay Hassan field in Kirkuk Governorate, northern Iraq.

The ministry added that the attack led to the explosion of the two wells, noting that the safety and firefighting teams managed to extinguish the fire in one of them, while working to control the fire of the other well.

In the middle of last month, the ministry announced an attack on one of the oil wells in Bai Hassan, which led to it being set ablaze.

The Bay Hassan oil field includes 196 oil wells, most of which are used to produce oil for domestic consumption.

The attacks of suspected ISIS militants have increased in the past few months, especially in the area between the governorates of Kirkuk, Salah al-Din (north) and Diyala (east), known as the “Triangle of Death.”

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over ISIS by reclaiming all of its lands, which were estimated at about a third of the country’s area, which ISIS invaded in the summer of 2014.

However, the organization still maintains what the authorities call “sleeper cells” in large areas in Iraq, and launches attacks at different times.
