Iranian media said today that Tehran will release 4 Americans accused of espionage in exchange for the release of 4 Iranians held in the United States, while Iranian optimism prevails over the Vienna talks and an American reservation after the conclusion of a ministerial meeting yesterday in the Austrian capital of the parties to the Iranian nuclear deal.
Iranian TV quoted an informed source as saying that there is an agreement on a prisoner exchange deal between Tehran and Washington, and the deal will include the release of $ 7 billion of frozen Iranian funds, while there has been no confirmation from the US authorities. Meanwhile, State Department spokesman Ned Price said that reports of a prisoner exchange agreement with Iran are untrue.
Reuters also quoted Iranian television that British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe will be released after paying a military debt. Iranian media said London would pay 400 million pounds for the release of the British prisoner.
The parties to the nuclear agreement concluded a meeting in the Austrian capital on Saturday at the level of assistant foreign ministers, with an agreement to hold a new meeting on May 7, amid Russian and Iranian optimism that the talks would proceed in the right direction.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that we may witness an important breakthrough in the coming weeks regarding sanctions on our country, noting that internal and external parties are taking advantage of the continuing sanctions and seeking to block the Vienna path.
“We are close to lifting sanctions, and we are optimistic about the Vienna talks and the return of growth and economic development,” Rouhani added.
Abbas Araghchi, assistant to the Iranian foreign minister, the chief Iranian negotiator, said that the negotiations had reached a stage of maturity, and had become more clear. Advertising
Araghchi explained – after the end of the negotiations – that the distances and differences are more specific and clear, indicating that the process is moving slowly but is moving forward, and that the date for reaching an agreement cannot be fully expected.
The Iranian official added that it was agreed to delete a list of individuals and entities subject to US sanctions, and it was also agreed to lift sanctions on sectors such as energy, finance and ports.
On the other hand, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said that Washington has not reached an agreement in Vienna yet, and there is a distance that must be traveled to overcome obstacles.
Sullivan added that our diplomats will continue to work in the coming weeks for a mutual return to the agreement and progress.
The Russian envoy, Mikhail Ulyanov, said that the talks are going in the right direction, but he excludes a breakthrough now, and added – according to what Reuters reported – that all indications lead to the expectation of a final outcome of the Vienna negotiations within a few weeks, and that this result is expected to be successful.
