The UN Security Council will hold – later today, Wednesday – a new emergency session at the request of Tunisia, Norway and China, to discuss the escalation in the occupied Palestinian territories, the second within 3 days, amid Turkish and Pakistani condemnation of the Israeli attacks.
Diplomatic sources indicated that the session may take place at 13:00 GMT, and it will be the second within two days if it takes place, noting that the issuance of Security Council statements requires the unanimous approval of all members of the Council (15 countries). On Monday, the first meeting held at the request of Tunisia (the only Arab member in the Security Council) ended without any joint declaration from the Council, because the United States had refrained “at this stage” from adopting a draft statement proposed by Norway.
This draft statement does not condemn violence. Rather, it proposes that the Security Council demand “Israel to halt settlement, demolition and expulsion activities” of Palestinians “including in East Jerusalem,” which have been a source of tension in recent weeks.
The draft statement also calls on both sides to “refrain from taking unilateral measures that exacerbate tension and undermine the chances of reaching a two-state solution,” and urges restraint, avoiding any provocation, and respecting “the historical status quo in the holy sites.”

Reuters quoted diplomats and a well-informed source as saying that the United States is delaying efforts by the UN Security Council to issue a statement, fearing it would harm ongoing efforts behind the scenes to end the escalation.
The source familiar with the US strategy – and who requested anonymity – said that Washington “is making intensive diplomatic efforts behind the scenes with all parties to reach a ceasefire,” and fears that a statement from the Council will lead to adverse results at the present time.
Earlier Tuesday, the White House said that Israel has the legitimate right to defend itself in the face of Hamas rocket attacks, but it has put pressure on Israel over the treatment of the Palestinians, saying that Jerusalem “should be a place of coexistence.”
For his part, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called in a statement for an “immediate cessation” of the escalation, and the United Nations envoy to the Middle East Tour Winsland warned that the escalating violence between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) would lead to “all-out war.”
Winsland called on the parties to “immediately cease fire,” adding, “We are heading towards all-out war. The

International condemnation
In the context, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that his country is seeking to obtain a resolution from the United Nations General Assembly on the Israeli attacks on the Palestinians, adding that the Islamic nation is looking forward to concrete steps that go beyond the statements of condemnation.
In turn, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip, which left dead and wounded Palestinian civilians, including children.
“This is another reprehensible act during the holy month of Ramadan, following the increase in restrictions on basic freedoms for the Palestinians, and the attacks inside and outside the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
She emphasized that “the indiscriminate use of force against unarmed Palestinians, which caused deaths and injuries, defies all human norms and human rights laws.”
The ministry stated that Islamabad called on the international community to put an end to the blatant use of force and the flagrant violation of the rights of the Palestinian people.
She stressed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, based on internationally agreed standards, and the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, is the only sustainable guarantee of peace in the region.
Since the beginning of the month of Ramadan, the city of Jerusalem has witnessed attacks by the Israeli police forces and settlers in the area of ”Bab al-Amud”, the “Sheikh Jarrah” neighborhood, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque and its environs.
For more than a week, the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Jerusalem has witnessed confrontations between the Israeli police and its Palestinian residents and in solidarity with them, as 12 families face the risk of eviction from their homes in favor of settlers, according to decisions issued by Israeli courts.
As of Tuesday evening, 5 Israelis were killed and 31 others were wounded, as a result of rockets fired by the resistance factions from Gaza, while 35 Palestinians – including 12 children – were killed and 220 wounded in Israeli air strikes on Gaza, according to official statistics.
