Patrick Theros – a former US State Department official – said that the high-ranking US delegation will start a tour of the Middle East that includes 4 Arab capitals; He wants to convey a clear message about the Geneva negotiations.
The American official – who served as his country’s ambassador to several Arab countries – confirmed to the “Beyond the News” program on (2/5/2021) that choosing a high-ranking delegation representing very effective institutions – to participate in this tour – indicates the importance of the message that the delegation carries to the countries it will visit. And it also refers to the critical US position on that message.
The US State Department announced that a high-ranking delegation consisting of personalities from the Ministry of State and Defense and the National Security Council will start a visit to the region that includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and the UAE. This announcement comes in light of leaks of tangible progress in the Vienna negotiations on returning to the nuclear agreement with Iran.
According to Theros’ reading of the nature of the delegation: He expected that the US administration headed by Joe Biden is seeking to prepare its old allies in the region for an important change related to the return to the nuclear agreement with Iran, and it also wants to inform them of the extent of its determination to complete this matter, which means that the countries that oppose this matter must adapt themselves to the new reality that In line with America’s national interests.
Theros pointed out that the previous US administration led by Donald Trump had withdrawn individually and without consulting anyone from the nuclear agreement with Tehran, and this behavior has met with the approval of some countries in the region, and now Biden came to tell his country’s old allies that he would return to this agreement without consulting anyone.
Kuwaiti writer and journalist Hussein Jamal agreed with Theros’s view, and said that Washington wants to end the nuclear file with Iran, because it wants to focus its efforts on facing the growing economic and military challenge imposed on it by China and Russia.
Jamal said that the Trump administration has been busy during its four years of creating crises in the region, without paying attention to the real great dangers posed by China’s economic growth or the Russian military expansion in areas considered to be of American influence.
As for the reason for not including Israel in this round, this is due to the existence of special calculations and understandings between the United States and Israel, and perhaps the same applies to Ankara.
And on the high-level US delegation discussing special issues with each of the four Arab countries; The former US official believed that these issues will be on the side and on the sidelines of the discussion of the Iranian nuclear file, because Washington does not want to appear that it is sending the last warning to its allies. The writer Jamal ruled out that the four countries would reject the US decision. Whereas, the nature of the US delegation confirms that the Biden administration has made up its mind.
He pointed out that these countries are closely linked with the United States, and cannot oppose them on basic issues and broad lines, even if some of them try to maneuver and head east, but he stressed that the maneuver is in secondary issues.
