The controversy over the arbitration cases in the Spanish League renewed after the match that saw Atletico Madrid win over Elche on Saturday.
The match ended with Atletico Madrid advancing with a single goal that allowed them to consolidate their position at the top of the standings with 76 points.
The match nearly ended in a draw had Elche’s Fidel Chávez missed a penalty kick in the 91st minute.
The replay footage showed Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak’s progress at the moment of the penalty kick, but the referee did not order a return-kick and the video assistive technology (FAR) referees did not interfere in that shot.
According to Spanish press reports that were based on the opinions of refereeing experts, the referee’s decision was correct because the law provides for the re-execution of the penalty kick if at least one of the goalkeeper’s feet was not on the goal line at the moment the ball was shot, provided that the goalkeeper’s move affected the trajectory of the ball.
This situation did not apply to Elche’s penalty kick because the ball collided with the post and the goalkeeper had no role in changing its direction despite his advance from the goal line.
With his verified victory today, Atletico Madrid keeps his fate in his hands, and he will guarantee the title if he wins the remaining four matches in the competition, regardless of the results of his pursuers.
